How to Calculate Soffit Square Footage

Use this formula:

Soffit area = total eave length × soffit width

Example:

If your home has 160 linear feet of eaves and the soffit is 2 feet wide:

160 × 2 = 320 sq ft

Now add waste. With 10% extra:

320 × 1.10 = 352 sq ft

So, you would order about 352 square feet of soffit material.

Do not measure only the front of the house. Measure the back, sides, porch roofs, garage returns, and small roof sections too. Rooflines are very good at hiding extra material when your cart is already full.

Quick Soffit Square Feet Table

100 ft1 ft100 sq ft110 sq ft
150 ft1.5 ft225 sq ft248 sq ft
200 ft2 ft400 sq ft440 sq ft
250 ft2 ft500 sq ft550 sq ft
300 ft2.5 ft750 sq ft825 sq ft

This table is useful for a fast check, but the calculator is better if you know panel coverage, waste, vented soffit percentage, and cost.

What Is a Soffit?

A soffit is the underside of the roof overhang between the exterior wall and the fascia board. It closes the eaves, protects the roof edge, improves the look of the house, and can help ventilate the attic when vented panels are used.

Common soffit materials include:

  • vinyl
  • aluminium
  • wood
  • fibre cement
  • composite panels

Vinyl soffit is common because it is lightweight, affordable, and low-maintenance. Aluminium is also popular because it handles moisture well. Wood can look beautiful, but it needs more maintenance, especially in wet or humid areas.

Vented Soffit Calculator: How Many Soffit Vents Do I Need?

Many homes need vented soffit to allow fresh air into the attic. This intake air works with ridge vents, roof vents, or other exhaust vents to reduce trapped heat and moisture.

A common attic ventilation rule is based on net free ventilating area, often 1/150 of attic floor area, with a 1/300 option allowed in specific balanced ventilation conditions. Your calculator uses these as planning assumptions and then estimates the soffit intake share. Always check local code and manufacturer NFA values.

To calculate soffit vent area, use the manufacturer’s net free area, not just the visible hole size. This is important because screens, louvers, and perforations reduce real airflow.

Soffit TypeBest Use
Vented soffitAttic intake ventilation
Solid soffitPorch ceilings, decorative areas, non-vented sections
Mixed soffitVented panels near attic areas and solid panels elsewhere

Warning:
Do not replace vented soffit with solid soffit unless the attic ventilation design still works. The soffit may look clean from the ground, but the attic can trap heat and moisture.

Soffit and Fascia Cost Calculator: What Affects Price?

Soffit cost depends on material, roof height, access, removal of old panels, hidden rot, fascia condition, ventilation work, and roof complexity.

For broad planning, HomeGuide lists soffit installation at about $4 to $22 per linear foot, depending on material and width. This Old House gives a wider soffit replacement range of about $6 to $30 per linear foot, with hidden rot or moisture damage increasing the final cost. Homewyse lists vinyl soffit installation from about $5.99 to $9.76 per linear foot in its May 2026 estimate.

Cost FactorWhy It Matters
MaterialVinyl, aluminium, wood, and fibre cement vary in price
Roof heightHigher eaves need more labour and safer access
Old soffit removalAdds time, disposal, and possible repair work
Hidden rotDamaged fascia or rafter tails can raise cost
VentilationVented panels and attic airflow may need planning
Roof complexityCorners, returns, gables, and porches increase waste

Use cost results as a planning range, not a contractor quote. Local labour rates and roof condition can change the final number quickly.

How Much Waste Should You Add?

Roofline TypeSuggested Waste
Simple straight eaves5–10%
Moderate corners and cuts10%
Complex roofline10–15%
DIY installation10–15%

For DIY work, 10–15% waste is usually safer. Running short by one panel is not a structural emergency, but it is a very annoying Saturday.

When Should You Replace Soffit?

You may need soffit replacement if you see:

  • sagging panels
  • peeling paint
  • soft or rotten wood
  • water stains
  • mould near the eaves
  • animal entry
  • blocked vents
  • loose fascia
  • gutter leaks near the roof edge

Soffit damage often connects to gutter, fascia, attic ventilation, or roof drainage problems. Fix the cause, not only the visible panel.

If water is overflowing behind the gutter, new soffit alone will not solve the problem. Check gutter slope, fascia boards, roof edge flashing, and where the water goes after it leaves the downspout.

Soffit vs Fascia

PartLocationMain Job
SoffitUnderside of roof overhangCloses eaves and supports ventilation
FasciaVertical board at roof edgeSupports gutters and finishes the roof edge
GutterAttached to fasciaCarries roof water away from the house

Many homeowners replace soffit and fascia together because damage often affects both. If the fascia is rotten or loose, repair it before installing new soffit.

Final Advice

A soffit calculator gives you a strong starting estimate. For a quick calculation, measure total eave length, multiply by soffit width, and add around 10% waste. For a better estimate, include panel coverage, vented soffit percentage, J/F-channel length, fascia length, and local material cost.

Do not treat soffit as decoration only. It protects the eaves, supports attic ventilation, and works with fascia and gutters. A clean soffit looks nice, but a roof edge that drains and ventilates properly is the real win.

FAQs

How do I calculate soffit square footage?

Multiply total eave length by soffit width. For example, 180 linear feet of eaves with a 2-foot soffit width equals 360 square feet. Add 5–15% waste depending on roof complexity.

How many soffit vents do I need?

It depends on attic floor area, required net free ventilation area, exhaust vents, and the manufacturer’s soffit vent NFA. Use the soffit vent calculator as a planning check, then confirm with local code.

Is soffit measured in linear feet or square feet?

Both are used. Contractors may quote by linear foot, while material coverage is often calculated in square feet or panels.

Can I use this as a vinyl soffit calculator?

Yes. Enter the actual vinyl soffit panel length, coverage width, panel cost, and waste factor to estimate panel quantity and cost.

Should I replace fascia with soffit?

If the fascia is rotten, loose, or damaged, repair or replace it before installing new soffit. Soffit and fascia work together at the roof edge.
